SON OF FRANKENSTEIN (1939)

Returning to his birthplace to claim his inheritance, Dr. Wolf Von Frankenstein (Basil Rathbone) finds his father's Monster (Boris Karloff), tended by a mad, vengeful, broken-necked blacksmith/body snatcher named Ygor (Bela Lugosi)! There's less of the Monster and more dialog in the third chapter of Universal's Frankenstein saga, which may be one reason why it features Karloff's last official screen appearance as Frankenstein's creation. Rowland V. Lee, a solid craftsman, replaced James Whale as director, probably due to the excess whimsy that the latter displayed in the previous sequel, THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN. Remarkable, Expressionistic sets adorn the film, which is rich in eerie atmosphere! Lugosi gives one of his finest screen performances as the sinister Ygor, the Monster's only true friend! Lionel Atwill gives an unforgettable performance as one-armed police inspector Krogh, who harbors a lifelong grudge against the Monster!
